PostPosted: Sat Dec 08, 2007 1:19 pm    Post subject: Queries regarding SIP project Reply with quote

Hello Everybody,
I have some doubts as well as queries to clarify in respect of SIP project. I am listing some of them below:

(1) As I am a B.Com(H) graduate from Calcutta University so I have some knowledge in finance but beside that here I am finding marketing very interesting and also scoring good marks in marketing subjects in comparison of finance subjects although truly speaking I am really scared of selling products. So, based on such situation I am going to take Finance as major and marketing as minor specialization and also going to take some finance project during SIP. So is it correct decision I am taking?

(2) Can anyone please help me by letting me know what kind of profile or project should I opt for and request my mentor if I am going to do my SIP in a Bank and willing to take finance??? Here I should let you know that I have developed some interent in share market also and right now I am totally confused about taking the decision of what kind of profile would give me most benefit through which I can learn a lot and which will ultimately help me in getting good final placements.

(3) Is it necessary to have sum sound knowledge right now about the company I am going to do SIP in and the also a good depth in the project I am willing to take because as far as know, in SIP we are actually going to learn new dimensions about the corporate culture.

(4) If I am going to do my SIP project in Kolkata then I suppose a mentor from IBS Kolkata will be provided to help me during the project, but will there be any problem in getting a good mentor as well as good grades?

Hence I will be really grateful if any senior student can help me in clarifying any of my queries and doubts.

Hi Joy,

Though am no expert, here is what id suggest

1. Yes , go for Finance. It would be a value addition and learning experience.not much to learn in Marketing. besides our campus is very active when it comes to Finance plus we have some reall good faculties for Finance. Above all u can anyday shift frm Finance to sales , but not vice versa. So do ur internship in a finance based project atleast and then u can be in a better position to take informed decison abt specialisation

2. one can takeup various projects in finance. Some of them are - equity research, working capital management, IPO's management, mutual funds etc. In a bank u should try to get into corporate finance division, SME and forex etc projects

3. Exactly.SIP is more abt getting a corporate work culture feel. u arent expected to be Know it all kinds ! though knowledge is always appreciated. so do ur homework, specially about the organisation. give it ur best shot. but at end of the day SIP will be more abt experience , knowledge would be a sub-set of the same

4. If u do ur SIP @ Kolkata, ull get a mentor from Kolkata campus. dont worry abt grades etc. u have no controll over it. make ur work speak for urself !

best of luck and i request all seniors to come forward. it takes 2 mins to help a junior - im sure we all have some responsiblity towards our future batches - lets do our bit.

hi khushroo,

SIP in MR is a good option , bt if done in an MR firm. or else it becomes an excuse to do nothing !
well apart from AC Nieilson u can also try for smaller firms into MR and also Business Researcha and consultancy

One such firm (which recruits evry year from IBS) is www.infiniti-research.com . infact we have one of its employees (and our alumni) on IbsRocks. His name is Mayank Bhargava. ull find him if u do some search Cool

Hi Khusroo,
SIP in MR is a real good option but you keep in mind few points:-
1. You do it from a good MR firm.

2. You get to understand what exactly you are doing. (Most of the time you end up collecting the data).

3. You are really willing to make a career in Marketing Research (coz' for a genuinely interested one research will create a nasha sort of orientation).

4. You need to make a clear demarcation in between qualitative vs. quantitative research. For quantitative you need to have good knowledge of statistics, software packages and a real crystal clear concepts of scaling . For qualitative part you need to read between the lines and most of the times it involves field works. (Although this is not a rule , but it happens).

5. Even if you get a MR project in any company, make sure what is expected of you. If this is just data collection, no use of doing the project. If some analysis is also involved go ahead without a second thought. I did my SIP from Mahindra&Mahindra Automobile. Initially it was a customer satisfaction + brand consideration set survey, but later I myself prepared the questionnaire in such a way that it consisted of questions on almost all the 4 P's of marketing. At the end of 3rd month project was so large and satisfactory that 4 out of the 5 suggestions made were implemented instantly. So just make sure that what so ever you say to your boss, you deliver more than that. Eventually my project was best at Mumbai centre.

6. If you are willing to make a career in MR, then remember it is not among the best of the paymaster industries. So will you be able to adjust later on?

7. For AC'Nielsen, as much I know, they entertain students for internship even if you approach them directly.

8. You can contact two of my batch mates who have done their SIP from AC'Nielsen:-
1. Amit Ranjan
2. Shitanshu Sharma
3. Himanshu (Myself @ alexihimanshu@gmail.com)
