had my MP/PI at ibs hyd on 11th.
let me first give a general overview, then i will give a detailed one for the benefit of similar profiled candidates....
All we dual program seniors (3+ years experience) had a separate panel. We did NOT have to give the presentation to a group of fellow candidates (good or bad? ... u decide, we did not have other candidates but the panelists were attentive and butting their questions/objections/counterviews in between) i was ok wth that cz i had a fair idea of my flow and had not memorised it or timed myself too accurately, those who do that lost their concentration.
2 year mba candidates, i gather, were grilled on acads and GK, but we were spared from that mostly, but theory related to the job needs to be thorough, same for details of the company (financial, management related, business model) must be known well, also govt. policies regarding that industry and some top companies in that sector.
apart from that, topic related to the MP was grilled inside out. they expect experienced guys to be able to do a thorough research.
now for the gory details....
abt 30-40 listed in the E1, E2, E3, F1 batches (that was from 9:15 to abt 11:45, if there were other batches in that category after that, i am not sure, as we never returned to that wing after we were thru)
soon, the PI's started and there were 2 cabins. one had 2 gentlemen and the one i went had one gentlemen and a lady, both south indians (probably tamilians, thoroughly well read, both of them !!!) these 2 got a notorious reputation as the PI's progressed and ppl started praying for the cabin with the 2 gentlemen.
soon, my turn came and i went in. my topic was one which i have neithr seen anyone saying abt it in any thread nor did i come across someone going for it at the campus (hollywood v/s bollywood).
The gentleman was a bald man so we will call him Bald Man (BM).
The lady was dressed in a sari with the colors of the national Flag so we will call her Flag Lady (FL).
FL (smiling in return to my smile): Please come in, have a seat Oh ! Jeetendra. you must have heard of Jeetendra the film star, do you know what his real name is?
Me : Yes Ma'm Ravi Kapoor
FL : hmmn, wat was the last movie he came in?
Me : Santaan, i think. I havent seen any movie after that (wat a fool i was ... Shld have said OSO, he was there in the 31 star song, 5 second appearance only, but still, i wld have been technically correct)
Anyways, then that usual crap, tell us something abt urself....
I said abt family background, mentioned that i did mech engineering and gniit from mumbai (without much detail) and then 6 years in IT, out of which 3 in programming and 3 in testing. then said tht i like to read, listen to music and interact socially (had good extra curriculars and had attached the citations in the form but did not stress on it).
then they asked me to give the presentation. i started off with importance of the topic from a management perspective. then spoke abt the differences. had prepared many but stuck to properly describing 4-5 major differences. then i hopped on to the similarities and lastly on how things look shaping in the futur. When just abt 2 mins were over, FL picked up the alarm and started playing wth it. I asked her "is that a time warning or something". She said "no, nothing of that sort, please continue" and kept the thing back on the table. then i went on with the MP without any interruptions.
because of this my PI was mostly on films and professional (IT) and i was grilled on both. movie questions ranged from what do u think abt the present crop of directors to a road where hollywood star details are etched out (later it struck me that it is hollywood boulevard, there i did not remembr and said "i am sorry, i do not know"). Another example
FL: Movies made by Mira Nair (had mentioned abt her in the presentation in the topic of Indian born Hoolywood directors)
Me: Salam Bombay, Namesake and Kamasutra...
FL: Are you sure KS was made by Mira Nair (trying to test if i was guessing, but I was sure and I nodded confidently).
Gave few more answers on movie based questions, then came the tumbling blocks....
BM: You mentioned abt Jaws in ur presentation. Do you know where its set is preserved for public display:
Me: Sorry, Sir, I dont know.
BM: No problem, Universal studios it is.
Me: Thanks for the information.
BM: Good, by the way, u mentioned hollywood studio system against star system in bolly. but stars like tom cruise, nicholas cage, etc are costly there also, how is it different from here.
Me: Sir, star fees is not the issue, that is high for the top few in both places, what i meant was that in hollywood, movies are made by studios, stars take their price, however high that may be, and do their work professionally, and that is the end. here stars dictate terms like directors/heroines of their choice, editing of co-stars roles, etc. he was more than pleased wth that.
Then BM winked to FL and murmured (which i overheard) "the boy knows abt movies".
To confirm, FL asked a few q's. For example...
FL: There is a tennis player who now makes Hollywood movies. You know abt that?
Me: Amritraj (forgot the 1st name)
FL: What is the first name? (did not know but justified why i did not know)
Me: I know abt the company Amritraj-Solomon which made Jeans. But i think it is Ashok Amritraj (Answer is Vijay but he has a brother Ashok so it was a decent blunder).
Then FL shifted gears and tried literature since i mentioned writing as an interest
FL: what kind of poems did Wordsworth write?
Me: Read long back, dont remember
FL: but that wldnt change his style.
Me: Mostly on nature (thats wat they were looking for)
FL: have u heard of chetan bhagat?
ME: yes, he wrote "one night at the call center" and "Five point someone"
FL: Hmmnn
Then BM got into IT and it was smooth. What platforms in development. I said VB. The he asked wat backend. i said SQL. then he said y not Oracle. i said "depends on projects whih company gets. Then he asked abt difference in SQL and oracle. thn abt testing black box and white box, automated tools used, etc. and i answered most of it. finally it was over in abt 15 minutes.
had lunch and chatted wth other candidates till the results were out.
saw the result .....
Selected for 2 year and campus given HYD and also for the 1 year Exec PG at HYD
What else, overheard some ppl saying that they mentioned they were not comfortable with some topic like GK or acads and then they had stress interviews grilling on that.
so i wld suggest keep a positive attitude, if u dont know somthng, admit it and display enthusiasm for knowing the right answer instead of showing a frustrated or nervous face and u will make it....
any more queries, welcome
all the best

hey people....
my interview was on 11th..all went well....and i was wondering for people complaining that the selection process was discrepant or biased....coz thankfully i dint find it in my case.....
i had the very first batch A1, serial number 11 in it.....we had interviews first.
my interview was pretty short..say 6 minutes.....and my first misconception was broken.....that is people having long interviews get better campus.....coz i found out at the end.....that this is not really the case....
they asked me 90% of the questions from my academics.....m doing english hons. from DU....so they asked me a lot about literature.....shakespeare, milton, classics, sonnets and some other things which were definitely no big deal for me. they dint ask me any GK, CMs or capitals or any current affairs....as were asked from many other candidates. then my interview mainly centered around why i wanna do MBA after english hons. so anybody from arts background be well prepared for it. you have to prove your credibility. so tell them honestly for y mba?? i said i wanna do it ..coz thats wat i always wanna do.....literature was a passion..it still is...but it wont give me the career i want to have..and of course i told them that what i posses as skills will be more useful and will be better implemented if i do MBA.....the opportunity which a career in english wont provide me. then a few more question like inflation, shares, sensex....which i satisfactorily answered.
then the presentation...which if u have confidence and good communication skills is not too difficult. i was lucky since no one else in my batch had prepared on the same topic. my topic was the ethics of sting journalism. one suggestion....apart from speaking skills...be very strong at your content.....for example...in my batch there were 3 continuous presentations on global warming....and man....!!!!!! look at the panel....they are human beings......they surely looked bugged up by the end....so content is a very important part.....make it somehow interesting that could catch their attention, even if preparing on topics like global warming, nuclear deal or whatever.
so presentation was cool...i dint face any problem.......
the entire thing for me got over by 12:15.....i came back....took breakfast.....and saw tare zameen pe in the waiting hall....
result announced at 4:30. i got selected for IBS gurgaon. was a lil disappointed...as i desperately wanted hyd. but gurgaon was my 2nd choice...so it wasnt bad too...i am still searching for that missing link that could have got me to IBS hyd.
CONFIDENCE is the key word. you have it....and you can do it...there is no other way and there is no reason to not to be confident...
good luck to everyone who are going to start a new learning phase in life by getting into a B-school....

I have somethings to tell to u all...
IBS is a corporate business school and unlike others it tries to evaluate the key skills of a manager like ..comm skills and the way u express ..
people who are experienced need not necessarily be gud at communication and presenting themselves I think in a practical way .. I got blore campus last year and this year I hope to get hyd campus I have my MP/PI on 18th ..If I get a reject letter then that means I lost my performance curve to the earth
So please dont feel bad about wat has happened ..IBS though is a gud place to learn myt not be able to cater for all the candidates coming from long ...Please be brave friends therez nothing we are gonna loose ..remember always
Fortune favors the bold !!!and not everything can luck buy to u
kudos to all those who got their dream campus !! |
Thats the spirit buddy !
Keep it up !!!!
