A successful Manager should be a generalist as well as a specialist.

As the B Schools & MBA grads increase each year, students are motivated to learn & work in niche markets( Hey I remember Kotler Shocked ). Result...Specialization in Insurance, banking and the like...

Are we getting too much carried away by a particular function & fail to create interest in other functions(Take IBS as example) Question

Is this the right approach for a leader:?:

gr8 topic krishnan...u seem to e hell bent on winning a free tee...buy one for urself dude Wink

okie now seriously speaking

i belive indian mba produces excellent employees....thts the whole setup , hence these specialisations focuss.

the day we remove focuss from placemnts ( think of it as a by product of education) , we would have more managers thn just employees.

believe me evn running small forum like ibsrocks has been an experience. i dnt hold any specialisation. i have done evrthing. and i mean evrything Wink

Nice topic to start off.

Krishnan, I beg to differ from you. In the sense, jack of all trades and Master of none would take you anywhere. You are right in saying, having an open mind in all avenues of learning is very important. But it is extremely important to specialise in one thing and have a focussed approach.

Might be, a person is interested in FMCG. But it would be nice if he could divulge which relates to interests. But, having his foothold on IT as well as FMCG as well Banking as well as retail wouldnt take him anywhere. Thus a channelised approach would give more benefits.

Open to views which contradict mine. All welcome Wink

Harish , MBA is not only about campus placements - wht you r saying is abt getting jobs and thus specialise....but u know after 2-3 years, whichever function you are in , an MBA is a people manager, resource manager and just a manger-whatever u can inferr from that.

you got to be som1 with wide knowledge , not indepth , coz you will have specialists under you to do the work for you. You just need to manage them, and thus have an overall idea of their specialisation.

Morover being a young growing nation - we want entrepreneurs , and specialists dont make good entrepreneurs ever - they are too cribbled by their own thought process !

Hello sirs,

Interesting topic!...well management is getting work done through others in the most effective manner and for that only specializations woud'nt help,so,every company would look for a person who could do everything!but this stage comes in very late Wink ...before that happens, a POTENTIAL manager must proove himself in the assigned task!

However, i think the company hire a person with a long term vision thats why they would want a person with cross functional knowledge...offcourse to save cost Cool .

Regards

Hey friend...

Excellent topic to discuss... But I believe that managers must mostly be master of one and jack of all cards...
