Hi Vikas,

How are you doing?

Well about the topic, what i can say is that, the degree you are talking about depends on the type of job within advertising you want. there are various things that you can do in the said industry.
Firstly, is the content and communication part, which needs a degree in the advertising, that you are talking about.
Secondly, there is sales job as well. Here selling means, to sell the channel in terms of the time slots for advertisement purposes to various clients.
Thirdly, the job of a media planner. What he/ she has to do is plan the advertising campaign for the clients he/ she is handling, i.e., which channel to choose for advertising.

So an MBA degree would suffice if you are interested in the second of the third profile.

Even i am interested in getting into the media line, i have even done my summer internship at Sony Entertainment Television, which have opened up the advertising line.

And i guess if you have it in you to get into it, you will not face any problems hence forth you enter the industry.
So i guess this should somewhat give you an insight into advertising industry.

If you want to anything else please do let us know. And if anyone else would add on to it, it would really help all those who are keen onto getting into this line.

Cheers!!

Regards
Arun

Dear Vikas,

i am not sure whether such companies would recruit you on the basis of you MBA degree. they may require a degree stating the your specialization in advertising.
and regarding the third thing i had mentioned, an MBA degree would do.

There is one more thing i would like to suggest you. i think just the mention of the word sales has made you think of the rest two options. but mind you sales job is really interesting. i have done that and also felt the same way a year ago. so you should always keep your options open. One doesn't know which might click!!!

Regards,
Arun

Found something relevant to it , here it goes

Quote:
Advertising in India -- it's an ad-mad world!

Ask Hital about the current scenario in the Indian advertising industry, and he responds enthusiastically -- "The Indian advertising scene is kick-ass, man! I think we're at par with the West in terms of the industry. See, in the '80s and '90s, advertisers in India were aping foreign concepts. But in the last decade, we've come into our own, and now advertisers abroad are falling for our ideas! The recent Nike World Cup Cricket advertisement, for instance, was conceptualised and created by JWT Bangalore, and it was such a hit that Nike is using the same concept in their advertisement running in the United Kingdom!"
What about the strong emphasis on moral decency imposed by Indian society on all forms of media? Does Hital feel like it hampers creative expression in any way? "I think our culture is what makes us different from the rest of the world -- it helps us stand out. If we were to switch to Western concepts, we'd have gelled with the West completely, and lost our individuality. There'd be no Bollywood-style entertainment, nothing unique to offer -- essentially, we would have no style of our own anymore."

Remind him of the charges brought against Tuff Shoes a few years ago, for their nude print advertisement featuring models Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman, and he says, "Well, that advertisement wasn't original -- it was inspired by a famous Western concept. I personally don't feel the need to resort to anything provocative when it comes to ideation. There's always a better way."

As far as plagiarism in the industry is concerned, Hital doesn't think there's due cause for concern. "You rarely see cases of blatant plagiarism in Indian advertising circles today," he says.

But he does have a message for industry newcomers with regards to plagiarism. "Be assured of one thing -- if you're committed and passionate towards your work, and have a flair for observance and simplicity, you'll go far. Don't ever resort to copying someone else's ideas -- try to come up with a better one instead!"

Want a career in advertising?

He's one of hottest names in the Indian ad industry right how. He's even made it into advertising magazine Campaign Brief Asia's 'Hottest 1,050 Creatives in Asia' list, and is in the Top 50 no less.
In the first half of the interview, which we carried yesterday, Hital Pandya talked about his dream campaigns.

Now, in the second half of the interview, JWT Advertising's 27-year-old creative director discusses the scope the advertising industry offers today's youngsters.

Hital has just two words for youngsters looking to make it in the advertising industry -- 'simplicity' and 'commitment'.

In terms of an educational background in advertising, he says, "If you're looking to get into the arts aspect of advertising, you need to have some sense of art and design. You can opt for a course in applied, commercial or fine arts. Copywriters, on the other hand, need to have good language skills and an ability to come up with original ideas that will sit well with the common man -- you know, they have to have a local flavour, so to speak."

Opting for the former, Hital's work was first noticed even before he embarked upon a full-time career. "While studying at Xavier's (St Xavier's College, Mumbai), I teamed up with a friend to shoot a short public service film on the railways. We conceptualised it, directed it and shot it all ourselves, and it was nominated for the Public Service Awards in the year 2001. It didn't win, though!"

Hital then moved on to his first job as a junior advertising executive at one of India's most recognised agencies -- Everest Advertising. Under creative director Uday Parkar and his successor Milind Dahimade, he began to learn about basic design, and to work on standard assignments.
